Biohazard Waste Disposal in Tampa, FL

Where the material came from changes the local route. This guide separates Hillsborough County's home-sharps program, household chemical events, City and County trash contacts, and facility biomedical-waste guidance.

Start with who generated the waste and the exact service address. Biohazard Cleanup Connect is an independent information and referral guide, not a cleanup or disposal operator.

Match the local route to the source.

Home-generated sharps, household chemicals, ordinary residential trash, and facility biomedical waste have different rules and contacts. A postal city or ZIP code does not tell you which City, County, or DOH program applies to an exact property.

    01

    Generated at home

    Household sharps

Hillsborough DOH lists a no-cost resident program for personal, home-generated sharps. Professionals and businesses use a different route.

    Household chemicals

    County HHW events

Selected Saturday events take eligible Hillsborough households' hazardous products. Used sharps, biomedical waste, medicines, and business waste are separate or excluded.

    Four DOH-listed Tampa handoff sites.

Florida DOH in Hillsborough County lists these locations through the Bay Area Sharps Disposal Program. The no-cost program is for Hillsborough County residents' personal, home use. Professionals and businesses cannot participate.

Confirm the details before traveling. The local DOH page does not state a site ID check, individual site phone numbers, an exact container specification, or whether outside containers are accepted. It does not confirm that every type of lancet is accepted.

    Hillsborough County health-program contact

Call DOH to confirm eligibility, accepted items, current hours, and site instructions. This is a health-program contact, not waste pickup.

    Before a handoff

Keep the container closed and with you.

    1. 1Ask the site which approved container and instructions to follow.
    2. 2Keep sharps away from children and place syringes intact.
    3. 3Close the container permanently when it is about three-quarters full.
    4. 4Hand it directly to staff, never unattended. Ask for a free replacement container.

The program accepts only approved, sealed containers. The exact container specification and acceptance of outside containers are not stated on the local page, so confirm first. Do not use this household program for business or facility waste.

    Hillsborough County · household chemicals

Three event locations, on selected Saturdays.

Hillsborough County lists events from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on selected Saturdays: Sheldon Road on the first Saturday, South County on the second, and Hillsborough Heights / East County on the third. Check the current County schedule before setting out. Weather can close a site early.

    Who can use the events

    • Hillsborough County households need a state-issued photo ID showing a Hillsborough residential address. Renters and apartment or condo residents are included.
    • The County describes drop-off as no-cost. Tampa residents may use the County events at no additional charge with a valid driver license as City-residency proof.
    • Business and commercial waste is not accepted.

Keep other materials on their own route

The County lists household examples such as cleaners and solvents, paint products, automotive fluids and oil, pool and lawn chemicals, batteries, mercury lamps and devices, propane or helium tanks, fire extinguishers, cooking oil, and LED bulbs. Item and quantity limits apply. Used needles and sharps, and biomedical waste, are excluded. For eligible home sharps, see the DOH route above. The County directs unused medicines to FDA disposal guidance, and household electronics use a separate route. County pages differ on paint quantity limits, so confirm current guidance before bringing paint.

Residential service · City or County

Trash service depends on the service address.

City of Tampa residential collection is twice weekly for City utility customers. New Tampa receives solid-waste service through Hillsborough County. A Tampa postal label or ZIP is not a service-eligibility check.

The City’s commercial-waste list is not a residential sharps rule.

The City residential pages reviewed here do not specifically state a household sharps or medical-waste curbside rule. A separate City prohibited-waste page names needles, sharps, and biomedical red-bag waste for commercial collection containers only. Do not extend that commercial rule to home carts. For home-generated sharps, use the DOH program details above and confirm current instructions.

For clinics, practices, labs, and other generators

Ask Hillsborough DOH about your facility.

Florida DOH in Hillsborough County’s Environmental Health Services program inspects, permits, and investigates local facilities that generate, transport, or treat biomedical waste. Generator questions and applications go to DOH in the county where the business is located.

This is regulatory guidance, not a pickup or drop-off service. Household sharps, County household hazardous waste, routine residential trash, and facility-generated biomedical waste are separate routes. Ask DOH which current requirements apply to your operation and activity.

    Tampa · exact-address context

Check the parcel, not the postal label.

The City of Tampa notes that many addresses with a Tampa postal label are outside City limits. A ZIP code or postal city does not determine City or County jurisdiction, collection service, program eligibility, or which office applies. Use the exact property address and confirm ambiguous parcels with the responsible authority.

New Tampa’s County-run solid-waste service is a separate service exception. It does not make a postal city or ZIP a general boundary test.

    Official address and map tools

Use the City address lookup, Plan Hillsborough jurisdiction layer, or County Map Viewer to orient the search. These GIS tools carry accuracy and currentness limits. Confirm an unclear parcel with the City or County.
